As our longtime fans know, Tim Leatherman created the world’s first pliers-based multi-tool after a budget trip to Europe in 1983. Forty years later, millions of people continue to overcome the unexpected with only their ingenuity and a Leatherman tool in hand. To commemorate this milestone, Leatherman has commissioned the Garage team to create its most advanced multi-tool: BATCH #005: 40TH ANNIVERSARY TOOL. We’ve built BATCH #005 on the FREE® technology platform, allowing one-handed opening to all tools and features. The primary blade is made from premium MagnaCut® steel—an industry first for multi-tools. Regarded as the best all-around steel for everyday carry knives, MagnaCut is first-class in terms of durability, edge retention, and corrosion resistance. The first tool that combines FREE® technology with fan-favorite features like spring-action pliers, customizable bit driver, unique Cerakote surfaces, and user-tensioned jaws to round out the latest innovations for the anniversary tool. BATCH #005 represents Tim’s original problem-solver mentality taken to the next level. With its advanced materials and features, we hope this tool inspires people to overcome new challenges they may face and to solve them with confidence and creativity.
Overall rating: 4.8350515 / 5 from 97 reviews.

The Leatherman series is noted for its versatility and smoothness, with the Magnacut blade receiving special commendation for its ease of use. Overall, the quality of the tools is considered exceptional.

"This tool is what the Arc should have been. Spring loaded pliers are such a nice feature to have that it mystifies me why they aren't an option on Leatherman tools. The flathead screwdriver with the blade is a better tool than the one on the Arc, and the sewing eye on the awl is nice, although the sharpness of the awl on the Arc is much better. The only downside is that the 40th tool does not have a wire stripper. This could have been remedied if they put the far superior can opener found on the surge onto the tool but for some reason they stuck with the crappy free series can opener. The cerakote finish, while it does look nice, flakes off rather easily. It is hands down the highest quality Leatherman tool I own, even higher than the Arc Obsidian that came with a perfectly smooth plier head (an unfortunately rare occurance). The fact that it was made in the USA is probably a big factor in that. The real downside to this tool is that because it is a limited run, it is not covered by the Leatherman warranty, and so it must be used sparingly and gently if at all."
"This multitool has everything I look for in a tool. I dont abuse this tool by any means as an intensive task ill get the proper tools but day to day and electrics it is perfect. Ive passed up other multitools due to the lack of spring loaded pliers. The tool selection is also great. Initially i didn't buy this tool cause of cost, but it was gifted to me and I must say if I could go back and pay the listing price for it I 100% would. And the only reason it is used and doesn't sit as a display piece is because the arc lacks the spring loaded pliers."
"This multitool is probably the highest quality tool Leatherman has ever produced. The spring loaded pliers are butter smooth to use. The Magnacut blade sparkles in the sunlight. The white cerakote finish contrasts with the rest of the toolset for a real halo product look. The only real downside to this tool, apart from its exclusivity, is the can opener. This is not a flaw unique to the Garage #5, but to the Free series as a whole. This can opener is objectively inferior to the one on the Charge/Wave/Surge due to its lack of a wire stripper. In fact the whole multitool itself doesn't have a wire stripper at all, unlike the Arc which at least has a 10 gauge stripper integrated into the awl. The fact that this collectible, ultra capable tool doesn't have a wire stripper is kind of a major downside in my opinion. I am torn between this and the Arc for what I consider the better tool. On one hand, spring loaded pliers are such a nice feature, especially if you are doing something in a tighter space. However, not having a wire stripper is a major oversight. The other problem is that the Garage products don't get the nice Leatherman warranty like the Arc does, so it kind of limits what you can do with it, since you don't really want to risk breaking something on it. Overall I'd say it's a 9. 5/10. Almost perfect."
"Best multitools in the world. . nothing compares to the quality. . don't care what other brands are out there. . . I'm very picky with the quality. . . this are always my favorite"
"I am lucky to have this tool in my collection! This is my favorite Sunday carry Leatherman. The only issue is that the finish wears out on the edges, even from pocket carry. Well I guess we’ll call it patina."
"I feel so lucky to have been able to purchase one of these. There are things I like about the ARC over the Batch#005, and things I like about the Batch#005 over the ARC. All in all, the Spring Action Pliers are what put's this product over the top. If you weren't lucky enough to get a Batch#005, the ARC is equally as good, minus the Spring Action Pliers."
"The tool isn't perfect, but after four months of daily use, it is the best I have used by far. The blade is fantastic and the spring loaded pliers have ruined me on non-spring loaded pliers. The internal implements are basically perfect for my needs. The white finish on the scales has chipped in some places, and the package opener on the flat head is a bit odd and hard to resharpen, but besides that I honestly don't have any real complaints."
"The fit and finish is top notch in this garage release. The tool set and features is pretty much perfect for an EDC role. Leatherman hit a home run with this iteration of the Garage series. I hope to see more variations of the free architecture as I think it lends itself perfectly for innovation."
"This tool is everything the ARC offers plus spring loaded pliers. The Cerakote surface is tough and makes it the best looking Leatherman tool they've ever produced."
"I live it absolutely love it. Smooth action, flawless ceracote finish, love the changeable bits, Magnacut blade is great. Love the new adjustable pivot for maintenance or spring change repair. Come for table in my hand when using. I have two problems, no good place for my lanyard, I make do with the hole at the top of the pocket clip, and the finish is wearing off where the tool contacts the ceracote when opened. But those are minor issues. I love m’y batch 5! I was born 7/5/63 and I purchased my 49th anniversary tool on 7/5/23. And HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO LEATHERMAN!"
